The Sustainability Imperative: ESGs from Concept to Action

Description

The course will introduce basic concepts of corporate sustainability, give examples of how different companies embedded ESG into their strategies and activities, and explore ESG initiatives for local companies.

Who should attend

The Sustainability Imperative course is appropriate for anyone in a management or supervisory position who wishes to be more familiar with the language and concerns of sustainability, or who needs to participate in the execution of company and departmental sustainability strategies and initiatives. This course is fit for managers in both the private sector (Publicly Listed or Privately-Held Corporation) and the public sector. It may also be useful for people being groomed for management or leadership positions as companies encounter both opportunities and risks in a rapidly changing environment.

At the end of the session, the participants will be able to:

  3. Discuss the tensions and challenges faced by the organizations in the implementation of ESGs

Dr. Emmanuel D. Delocado
Dr. Emman Delocado is the Director of the Ateneo Institute of Sustainability. He received his bachelor’s degree and his PhD in Biology from the Ateneo de Manila University. He is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology and the Laboratory Head of the Ateneo Biodiversity Research Laboratory. He specializes in freshwater biodiversity and insect systematics, and his research interests include biodiversity conservation and education for sustainable development. Concurrently, he serves as the Executive Director of the ASEAN University Network on Ecological Education and Culture (AUN-EEC) and the Managing Editor of the Philippine Journal for Systematic Biology (PJSB).

Dr. Ma. Assunta C. Cuyegkeng
Dr. Achoot Cuyegkeng is currently a consultant of AIS, Professor at the Department of Educational Leadership and Management of GBSEALD, and the Executive Director of the Lily Gokongwei Ngochua Leadership Academy. She was the Managing Editor of the Journal of Management for Global Sustainability from 2017-2025. She helped establish AIS and became its Director from 2013 to 2021. She led the development of the Minor in Sustainability, MS in Sustainability Management, and sustainability-related research in the John Gokongwei School of Management. She obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chemistry from AdMU and her doctoral degree in Chemistry from the University of Regensburg in Germany.  Her expertise includes sustainability, education, leadership, educational management, and critical realist research approaches. Previously, she served as the Vice President for the Loyola Schools of the Ateneo de Manila, taking charge of operations from 2006-2010.

Mr. Josiah Theodore J. Cacayan
Mr. Theo Cacayan is the Program Head for Organizational Sustainability at the Ateneo Institute of Sustainability. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management from the University of the Philippines Diliman and a master’s degree in Sustainability Management from Ateneo de Manila University. He is also a Lecturer at the Department of Leadership and Strategy. With years of experience in the hospitality and food & beverage industry, he built a strong foundation in business operations, strategy, and service excellence. His exposure to a social enterprise employing persons with disabilities deepened his commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in business. 

Ms. Ma Margarita Christina A. Lacdao-Umali
Ms. Chris Lacdao-Umali is the Program Head for Sustainable Development Goals at the Ateneo Institute of Sustainability wherein she works at the intersectionality of education, networks, and sustainability. She received both her bachelor's degree in Humanities and her master's degree in Basic Education Teaching from the Ateneo de Manila University. She taught Creative Nonfiction and Creative Writing courses in the Ateneo Senior High School, where she challenged her students to use their stories and words to bring to light the values and beliefs they uphold. Currently, she is the Secretariat Head of the ASEAN University Network on Ecological Education and Culture (AUN-EEC).

Dr. Robert Edric Josef R. Lizares
Dr. Robbie Lizares is an Assistant Professor at the Leadership and Strategy Department of the John Gokongwei School of Management (JGSOM). He has worked in marketing and general management in diverse business settings spanning from startups to large multinationals in various industries both in the Philippines and the US. He received his undergraduate degree in BS Management, Major in Communications Technology Management from Ateneo de Manila University, graduating summa cum laude, and his MBA from the University of California in Berkeley, which allowed him to gain more exposure to dynamic business models in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley. His research work has focused on virtual and sustainability leadership.

Mr. Daniel C. Ratilla
Mr. Daniel Ratilla is the Program Head for Climate and Disaster Resilience at the Ateneo Institute of Sustainability, and serves as Lecturer at the Department of Environmental Science. He is currently the Focal Point of the My Climate Risk (MCR) – Ateneo de Manila University Regional Hub of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). He received his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, and his master’s degree in Environmental Management from the Ateneo de Manila University. Approaching his work from an interdisciplinary perspective, he has been involved in research projects relating to climate risk, multisectoral collaboration for resilience, and ecological education.

Ms. Riza Maree D.C. Rapada
Ms. Riza Maree Rapada is the Program Officer for Sustainable Development Goals at the Ateneo Institute of Sustainability. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from the Ateneo de Manila University, graduating as the Program Awardee of her batch. Before joining AIS, she taught Practical Research Courses in the Ateneo Senior High School, where she mentored hundreds of students–most of whom were first-time researchers–in the conceptualization, planning, and execution of their research projects. She hopes to engage in biodiversity conservation, with a particular focus on the role of marine protected areas in the preservation of marine ecosystems.
