Description
Introduction to Sustainable Facilities Management, will equip facilities managers with a strategic blend of core principles, technical proficiencies, and leadership capabilities essential to navigating the evolving demands of the built environment. This course bridges foundational knowledge with advanced, real-world applications, empowering participants to drive operational efficiency, asset performance, and sustainable value creation within their organizations.
This course provides an in-depth examination of basic principles and prevailing industry methodologies in Facilities Management. Anchored on Ateneo’s leadership and sustainability framework, it is structured to deliver a strategic, systems-based perspective on the core competencies and emerging trends that shape high-performing, resilient, and sustainable facilities operations in today’s VUCA business environment.
This consists of four (4) modules: Fundamentals of Facilities Management; Smart and Sustainable Building Operations; Key Operational Drivers and Governance; and Sustainability and Leadership Mindset for Facilities Managers.

Mr. Jan Arvin S. Barcena has extensive experience in Corporate Real Estate, General Administration, and Facilities Management, with decades of leadership exposure across various industries, including the telecommunications and IT-BPO sectors.
He is currently a member of the Management Committee of Eastern Communications, where he serves as the Head of General Affairs and Administration. In this role, he provides sustainable and strategic oversight of facilities and engineering operations, security and safety, fleet management, travel services, property and lease management, asset management, and other related back-office administrative functions. He previously served as Country Administration Head for Trend Micro Inc. Philippines, a pioneering multinational cybersecurity firm, and as Global Facilities Director for Transcom Asia, where he led facilities operations and workspace strategies.
In addition to his corporate responsibilities, he is also a faculty member at the Ateneo de Manila University – John Gokongwei School of Management and a resource person at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business – Center for Continuing Education. His academic work focuses on Sustainability Management, Leadership Frameworks, and Internship Programs.
He holds a Master in Business Administration from the Ateneo Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Santo Tomas. He also completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Management from De La Salle University – College of St. Benilde. He is a member of the Maxwell LeadershipÒ Philippines Founders Circle.
His work reflects a strong commitment to advancing holistic leadership that integrates sustainability into long-term, stakeholder-centric operations.
