The Sustainability Imperative: ESG from Concept to Action

Description

Philippine business organizations are becoming more aware of sustainability in business, probably as a result of different factors in recent years. Investors are increasingly conscious that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices of a company may affect its costs and risks. When the Securities and Exchange Commission announced in December 2018 that they were going to require publicly-listed companies to submit sustainability reports, even the companies that initially did not care about sustainable development had no choice but to take notice. Thus, Philippine companies, which did not pay attention to sustainability five years ago, are now seeing the need to talk the language of sustainability in the new global landscape. The course will introduce basic concepts of corporate sustainability, give examples of how different companies embedded ESG into their strategies and activities, explore ESG initiatives for local companies.

Who should attend

The Sustainability Imperative course is appropriate for anyone in a management or supervisory position who wishes to be more familiar with the language and concerns of sustainability, or who needs to participate in the execution of company and departmental sustainability strategies and initiatives. This course is fit for managers in both the private sector (Publicly Listed or Privately-Held Corporation) and the public sector.

It may also be useful for people being groomed for management or leadership positions as companies encounter both opportunities and risks in a rapidly changing environment.

At the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the broader sustainability context;
  2. Describe the environment, social, and governance (ESG) framework;
  3. Discuss the tensions and challenges faced by organizations in the implementation of ESG;
  4. Evaluate the benefits of good practice in ESG; and
  5. Identify opportunities for ESG implementation or enhancement in their respective companies.
