Labor Law Essentials for Managers (IN-PERSON)

Description

Labor Law Essentials is an introductory course to Philippine Labor Law. The course covers the most important segments of Labor Law, such as employment relationship and contracting arrangements, labor standards and employee benefits, labor relations law, and termination of employment and basic dispute settlement. 

The course is intended for managers who are expected to be knowledgeable with labor law compliance and human resource practitioners whose practice is complemented by being adept with the legal aspect of human resource management. Appropriate for non-lawyers as it is designed and delivered in a relatively simpler manner, without sacrificing the important details and technicalities of the law.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course, participants are expected to:

Atty. Ryan Quan is a full-time faculty member at the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law, where he teaches human rights law, labor law, and related courses, and serves as a bar reviewer in labor law and social legislation. He is also coordinator of the Graduate Legal Studies Institute, helping administer the International Master of Laws program and spearheading academic linkages with partner institutions. 

Beyond his work in academia, he has contributed significantly to research and advocacy on human rights, gender, labor, and climate change. He has served as a legal specialist at the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines and as director of the Ateneo Human Rights Center Internship Program, mentoring law students and advancing human rights advocacy. As an independent consultant and researcher, he has worked with international organizations such as the International Development Law Organization, Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, and the United Nations, producing studies and facilitating trainings on gender, climate change, and access to justice.

He is the author of the four-volume series Not to BeLABOR the Point: Cases on Labor Law, published by Rex Book Store, as well as numerous book chapters and articles on human rights, labor, climate justice, indigenous peoples’ rights, and development issues, with several works published internationally by Routledge, Edward Elgar, and ASEAN University Network. His chapter on internal displacement after Typhoon Haiyan was recognized as the Scholarly Work with Most Social Impact (Professional Schools) at the Ateneo de Manila University Scholarly Work Awards 2021.

Atty. Quan earned his Master of Laws in International Human Rights Law, summa cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame Law School as a scholar of its Center for Civil and Human Rights. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law and dual bachelor’s degrees in Development Studies and Legal Management from De La Salle University, where he graduated with leadership awards.
